Honestly, I don't think it's such a big deal. It forces you to reconsider your tactics when you probably never bothered to up until the point a boss smothered you to death, but there's TONS of ways to circumvent the possibility if you just seek the solutions.
Bring food because it recovers HP and AP. Use equipment that lets you move faster to avoid getting grappled. Use defense or HP bonuses to survive even if they do chain grapple you.

Use a bow or staff to stay out of range. In my experience it's practically random chance whether I escape a grab after two hits or after I die and lose half of my health on a second life. Even if I get grabbed twice in a row with full AP and the same stats since I neither lost nor gained levels in the meantime sometimes the first grab will hit twice and the second will hit upwards of twenty times for no apparent reason so far as I can tell.Hell, on rare occasions I'll get grabbed and not get damaged at all, not even the damage from getting thrown out of the grab, the enemy will just suddenly move away and I'll reappear on the ground, which I seriously doubt is an intended impact of my stats, further convincing me it's just RNG.
